FAQ
What Is a Level 2 EV Charging Station?
- Residential Level 2 EV chargers are advanced, sensitive pieces of electronic equipment. Repairing them requires a highly trained and licensed electrician to perform effective diagnostics, testing, and repairs.
- Whatever brand of charging station you have, Mr. Electric can repair all components for your home charging station, including: power control units (PCU), battery monitoring systems (BMS), converters, power modules, cords, rectifiers, and dispensers.
- The ability to more quickly charge an electric car or truck at home is a convenience enjoyed by a growing number of EV owners. If your Level 2 charger is not performing like it used to, your local Mr. Electric can help.
How long does it take to charge an electric car?
-
If you just want to put 100 miles of range on your car for tomorrow’s daily commute, it will take 22 hours with a Level 1—which is technically impossible to complete overnight. A Level 2 charger, however, will give your car or truck 100 miles of range in just 4.5 hours. An added benefit is that since you won’t have to charge your EV around the clock, a Level 2 charger allows you to save money by taking advantage of any evening off-peak rates offered by your utility company (which are becoming more prevalent, especially during the hottest summer months).
If you pull into your driveway with very little charge remaining on a car with a 250-mile range, your Level 1 charger would need 50 hours to bring your car to full charge. With a Level 2 charger, your vehicle would be fully charged in 11 hours—still possible inside non-peak hours.
Do I need 200-amp service to add an EV charger?
- Yes, it’s a good idea to have 200-amp service for your home if you have a Level 2 EV charger in your garage. Many EV chargers pull between 30 and 50 amps. To provide adequate power for the rest of your home’s electrical needs, 200-amp service is the way to go. Mr. Electric can upgrade your electrical system’s capacity.
How often should I charge my electric car?
- In general, electric vehicle batteries should be kept between 30% and 80% capacity as much as possible to maximize battery life. When the battery is completely empty or fully charged, it puts a strain on the battery and can reduce its overall lifespan. Consult your owner’s manual for vehicle-specific guidance about charging. If possible, choose a charger that can be programmed to turn off automatically when the battery reaches a certain charge level.
Level 2 EV Charging Station Repair and Service
As the popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) grows, demand for home charging solutions is also on the rise. While most electric cars come standard with a charging cord, residential Level 2 chargers offer a much faster charge and occupy essentially no additional garage space.

What Are Electrical Code Updates?
-
The National Electrical Code (NEC) is the nation’s singular standard for safe electrical installation and wiring practices. The NEC sets electrical code standards for safe electrical design, installation, and inspection to protect people and property from electrical hazards.
First published in 1897, the NEC is updated every three years by the NFPA to reduce accidents and minimize fire hazards resulting from the use of electricity.
Why Is It Important to Be Informed about Electrical Code Updates?
- Here’s an example: Did you know that as ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) requirements have been expanded over the years, the number of residential electrical shock incidents have gone down? Being informed about electrical code updates such as these gives homeowners the insight to better protect their lives and property.
